Thomas (James) HOLLAND, son of Thomas HOLLAND (c. 1786-c. 1835) and Catherine ADAMS (c. 1794-c. 1872), was born circa 1817 in South Lopham, Norfolk. He was attested into the military on 6 December 1836 - aged 19, a sadler by trade, joined up at Ipswich, joining the 17th Regiment of Lancers, Private 496. Thomas’s service was terminated on 21 August 1837 due to disability reasons. He was diagnosed with chronic rheumatism, mainly affecting his knees, this not being as a result of his time in the service, so was deemed unfit for further service. He had served for 282 days in total when finally discharged on 13 September 1837. On 14 July 1883 he was admitted to St. Andrew’s Workhouse in Norwich from the parish of St. Augustine. Thomas died on 8 May 1884 in St. Andrew’s Workhouse in Norwich aged 66.
